Another clip that is thought provoking on YouTube from Matt is called Training and the iMethod. He is pushing for the evolution of--and higher education in--coaching and training methods. Not just his subjective perspective either, it's empirically based, tested and refined. It disturbingly challenges us to shed parts of our traditional methods / comfort zone and carve a new way. Nice of him to point us in the direction, now it's up to us to adapt for the sake of functionality.

PS-I am a fan of HuBud, sumbrada, etc. Confused

I too think MATT thornton is right on the money with his theories and ideas, and like Dale, I too am a fan of hubud, and trapping, and Sumbrada..

I think what needs to be stressed, is that your intention in practicing is NOT to use hubud or sumbrada in an actual street situation.. but to build certain attributes.. As long as you trian to fight realistically and not theoretically, i don't see these drills as a waste of time.. Jumping rope has many benefits, but you would never pull one out of you pocket and start skipping when confronted in an alley somewhere..

this may seem like a ridiculous point, but it illustrates what i am saying.. just because something does not have a direct correllation with fighting and being "alive" does not mean that it is useless..

i would NEVER use hubud in a real fight, but elements of it are definitely applicable.. you just have to train it in a fully resisting sparring situation...

Just my 2 cents..

Dave

Check out some of the Dog Brother's videos, like Kali Tudo, to see the JKD/FMA techniques made functional. Mat has good ideas but made a mistake in abandoning his previous training for MMA. Everything he learned in JKD was functional, he just didn't know how to use it. I got the chance to train with Crafty Dog a few weeks back and that was one of his main points. He would be in the thick of things and call out "Look! Pak Sao Da! But that doesn't work, right?" As he plowed through his opponent Smile
